What "Organic" Actually Means in India - And Why Farm-Direct Is Often Better
Walk through any modern supermarket and you will find shelves full of products stamped "organic." Premium prices. Green packaging. Reassuring labels. But what does organic actually mean in India - and is a label alone enough to guarantee that what you are buying is truly clean?
The answer is more complicated than the packaging suggests.
What "Organic" Legally Means in India
In India, organic certification is governed by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) under the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) and Participatory Guarantee System (PGS-India). A product can only be labelled organic if it is grown without synthetic pesticides, fertilisers, or GMOs and has been certified by an accredited body.
On paper, this is a strong standard. In practice, certification is expensive, time-consuming, and largely inaccessible to small and marginal farmers who make up over 80% of India's farming population.
The Certification Gap
A farmer growing chemical-free crops on two acres in Telangana may be farming more cleanly than a large certified operation. But without the paperwork and fees, they cannot legally call their produce organic even if the soil has never seen a synthetic input.
Meanwhile, large brands can obtain organic certification for one facility or product line while operating conventional supply chains elsewhere. Certification tells you about a process. It does not always tell you about a relationship.

What to Actually Look for When Buying Clean Food
Rather than relying solely on certification labels, consider asking: Does the brand know where its ingredients come from? Are farmers fairly compensated? Is the processing minimal and transparent? Are ingredients free from unnecessary additives and preservatives?

Organic certification is a useful signal. But it is not the whole picture. Sometimes the cleanest food comes not from the loudest label, but from the shortest, most honest supply chain between a farmer's field and your kitchen table.
