Millet : The Powerhouse Grain

Millet : The Powerhouse Grain

One of the oldest grains known to humans, millet is possibly the first cereal crop to be used for domestic purposes. These are small-seeded grasses, which are hardy and grow well in dry zones as rain-fed crops.

Each millet is three to five times more nutritionally superior to rice and wheat in proteins, minerals, and vitamins. Millet is rich in vitamin B, calcium and iron. It is:

  • Gluten-free

  • Has Low-GI (Glycemic index)

  • Beneficial for diabetic patients

  • Suitable for people with allergies and wheat intolerance.

Children have been known to learn from experience and from what they see. They mimic their parents habits. If parents eat healthy, they will also learn to eat healthy. The older generations consumed portions of millet in their daily diet, and it’s only in the past few decades that their intake has reduced. The goodness of millet must be welcomed. Their high magnesium level is good for lowering blood pressure, while the potassium content keeps hypertension at bay. Their high-fiber content helps in bowel movement and manages obesity.

Recent studies show that millet is among the healthiest grains for consumption. In 2010, a study published in the Pathophysiology journal mentioned that eating millet could help lower blood glucose. Subsequently, a research paper published in the Journal of Agricultural And Food Chemistry confirmed that all millet are rich sources of antioxidants.

Over the years, the preparation of millet has become exponentially easier. With the advent of instant mixes in the market, it no longer proves to be a cumbersome task. From ragi pancakes to millet dosa to bajre ki khichdi, millet can be easily included in our diet. Lots of companies are coming with new and interesting products which has a high content of millet. They have a wide range of products like Ragi dosa, Adai dosa, Ragi Idli to name a few.
